Partners Stuart Singer in Fort Lauderdale and David Barrett in New York were honored as “Litigators of the Week” by AmLaw’s Litigation Daily for their recoveries for investors in Bernard Madoff feeder funds. The honor came after the announcement last Thursday of a $55 million settlement with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, which had audited the feeder funds, bringing to an end seven years of litigation that has recovered $235 million for the investors. Litigation Daily recognized the work of Stuart, David, and others at the firm in overcoming multiple legal hurdles that had proved insurmountable to lawyers in other Madoff feeder fund litigation. These hurdles included an apparent bar under the Securities Litigation Standards Act (SLUSA), arguments that the claims were pre-empted under New York’s Martin Act, and an attempt to block the litigation by the trustee for the Madoff liquidation. In addition to Litigator of the Week honors for Stuart and David, the settlement with PwC garnered positive coverage from the Wall Street Journal and other major outlets. Other lawyers at the firm who played leading roles in the litigation include partners Sashi Bach and Carlos Sires in Fort Lauderdale, partner Howard Vickery in New York, and counsel Eli Glasser in Fort Lauderdale.
