Law.com International reported on the lawsuit Telf AG & Mayaniquel SA v. Juan Pablo Carrasco de Groote, which was filed by BSF in a Florida state court against the Guatemalan lawyer Juan Pablo Carrasco de Groote. The suit was filed on behalf of the Swiss commodities company Telf AG and its Guatemalan subsidiary, mining company Mayaniquel SA.
The lawsuit alleges that Carrasco's statement — claiming that Mayaniquel and a different Guatemalan mine were the same entity and under common ownership — resulted in sanctions being imposed on Mayaniquel by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control. As a result, the lawsuit seeks to hold Carrasco and those who worked with him responsible for the economic harm caused, including the suspension of the mine’s operations, which impacted over 1,000 workers.
