Boies Schiller Flexner LLP today announced that Katie Kavanaugh, who is a registered foreign legal consultant with the State Bar of California, has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as a partner. Genesis Shin will also join with Katie as an associate.
Katie handles all aspects of intellectual property litigation, with a primary focus on global anti-counterfeit, trademark, and copyright infringement issues. Her experience spans U.S. and international markets, including China, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Her clients range from individual artists and inventors to fashion brands and global consumer goods manufacturers. She has worked closely with anti-counterfeiting organizations dedicated to identifying, litigating, and removing counterfeited products in the market. Genesis has experience with all areas of intellectual property law, as well as complex civil litigation and regulatory compliance.
“Boies Schiller’s international platform makes it the perfect place to continue growing my anti-counterfeiting litigation work, an area of my practice that has seen extensive growth globally,” Katie said. “The firm has a reputation for taking and winning big cases, and I was drawn to the truly innovative, entrepreneurial culture here. I am thrilled to join such a celebrated group of litigators.”
In addition to building out her anti-counterfeiting practice, Katie will focus on other areas of intellectual property litigation, with cases involving patent infringement and invalidity, as well as copyright and trademark infringement. Her experience also includes general business litigation, such as claims for breach of contract and defamation.
“Katie is a great fit for Boies Schiller and someone who will clearly hit the ground running,” said Maxwell Pritt, administrative partner for the firm’s California offices. “Her focus on anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property litigation will be an important offering for clients firmwide, as that area continues to expand rapidly. She and Genesis are both excellent additions to our West Coast team, and I look forward to working with them.”
Katie and Genesis join the firm from a Silicon Valley-based boutique law firm. Katie contributed to that firm’s national expansion and ultimately oversaw its entire intellectual property practice. Previously, she had worked at a large global law firm as a foreign advisor on intellectual property law across its London, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles offices.
“Katie is a rising star who demonstrates the attributes we value in a new partner,” added BSF Managing Partners Sigrid McCawley, Matthew L. Schwartz, and Alan Vickery. “As we continue to focus on strategic growth throughout the firm, we will capitalize on opportunities to bring onboard high-quality trial lawyers whose experience and client base are a good fit for our existing platform and who have the intangible qualities of a Boies Schiller attorney. Katie more than delivers, and we have no doubt she will be a big asset to the firm.”
BSF’s intellectual property practice includes protecting client’s valuable IP rights in everything from technological innovations to works of art. The firm has extensive experience representing plaintiffs and defendants in a full range of high-stakes, high-profile lawsuits involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and other intellectual property.
